When to go:

The weather and season in Malaysia are determining factors in deciding where and when to go. The East Coast should be avoided from November through February and into March. Watch the news for weather updates. The monsoons block roads and stop ferry crossings. Many East Coast places just plain close down during this time of year.

East (Borneo) Malaysia is good to go any time of year BUT again, the monsoon season can bring daily rains (often a blessing). When I was in Sabah at Christmas '07 (Turtle Island-Selingan Island--40 km out from Sandakan) I was informed that the week previous the waves were so high a boat flipped while attempting the crossing. Everyone survived but all belongings were lost. We had glassed out seas when we crossed over but still, food for thought. Also, Sipidan in S. Sabah is great all the time but obviously the visibility won't be at it's prime during the monsoon season.
